"Team-based learning (TBL) is a highly structured flipped classroom teaching method that solves common challenges encountered in healthcare education. What do we all want to achieve? We want enquiring students, who are able to study information independently outside of the classroom, and can then use that information to solve scientific or clinical problems with their colleagues, creatively. We want the students to take responsibility and be accountable for their own learning, to be able to explain key concepts, make a reasoned argument, and work well with others, including in an inter-professional setting. We want good engagement, with students showing up in the classroom having done their background reading. TBL as a method really does deliver all this, and while it is a significant change in ways of working and thinking for educators, most of us who have taught using TBL would never go back to lectures!"

Project Session: DIGI4HEALTH

Mr. Jonathan C. Borg, Director, MECB

Facilitator: Mr. David Smith, Director, International Network for Health Workforce Education

Educators and trainers of the health workforce need to be urgently assisted to catch up with the range of digital technology advancements taking place due to Health4.0. At the same time, as working adults, healthcare personnel have a difficulty to find the time to attend continuous professional development (CPD) courses. Nevertheless, these adult workers need to be supported learning about digital technologies infiltrating the health sector. For this reason, VET trainers as well as healthcare mentors need a Toolkit with an open repository of relevant training resources to aid them in helping healthcare personnel catch up with HEALTH4.0 technologies even in work-based settings. The main aim of this Project called digi4HEALTH (A Digital VET Toolkit for Promoting the 4th Industrial Revolution in the European Health Sector) is to develop a novel digital toolkit by which European VET Trainers and health sector mentors can reach out and assist healthcare professionals and stakeholders to catch up with technologies of the 4th Industrial Revolution.

There is a growing trend towards online learning and using virtual patients in educating health professionals in various clinical skills, particularly during this pandemic era. Online learning with virtual patients (VPs) allow learners to engage with simulated patients, providing a safe environment in which to learn about methods and practice their skills followed by sharing experiences and learnings with peers as part of team-based learning. There are various approaches to the development of and engagement with VPs, whether part of an undergraduate or post graduate curriculum or continuing professional development. This workshop provides the opportunity for participants to engage with a pilot version of a virtual patient conversation tool for Motivational Interviewing (MI), provide input into the ongoing development of the VP, and explore the use and value of virtual patients in teaching MI and other clinical skills to health professionals.

    Mr. Eli Anderson, Director, StoryAid

Miss Emer Thompson, Nurse Lecturer, Institute of Technology Tralee

Facilitator: Mr. David Smith, Director, International Network for Health Workforce Education

Current healthcare training curriculum relies upon a comprehensive understanding of the bio-medical model of medicine. However, it has been recognised that a curriculum that incorporates a more rounded model is critical. To explore a new model of healthcare training, storytelling can become a crucial tool for educators to show the hidden and silent stories of both, patients, healthcare processional, loved one, and vulnerable people who are receiving care. At the same time Europe faces increased demand for health services due to ageing populations, rising patient mobility, and a diminishing supply of health workers caused by retirement rates that surpass recruitment rates. This places great emphasis on the health workforce with the majority of health system change enacted by healthcare professionals themselves.
