This novel competencies framework is a very important achievement and a milestone towards strengthening the professionalisation of the public health workforce. The framework applies an innovative approach; it is based on a systematic review of available information and evidence, comprehensive consultation across countries and a wide range of contributors from different fields of public health. The Framework has been initiated by the WHO Regional Office for Europe Coalition of Partners and ASPHER; the work was led by Kasia Czabanowska and her team. It was supported by many other organisations and colleagues, including EUPHA and the EUPHA Health Workforce Research section. The framework is a helpful tool, which may inform the development of public health curricula and training programmes for a health workforce fit for future needs and challenges.
